Day 10 - Maratea to Villa San Giovani

Day started as most have, swelteringly hot and just like you back in the UK from what I hear.

I had the bike apart before we went to brekkie and found  to my surpise, some coolant in the header tank. I topped it up to max, so that should do the trick, for a while at least.

We had no POI stops for today, just one fuel stop to break up the 163 miles journey.

We had plenty of time when we left at 9:30am, so there was no need to rush. The SS18 had a 70kph limit and I was happy to do that, letting the others around us do their usual thing. Another tunnel overtake, was probably the highlight of our first stint. Around 11am we pulled into a LIDL in Amatea for some refreshments and doughnuts.

When we came to leave, it was the Shadslow's turn to play up. A recurrence he thinks of last year's side stand switch issues. The bloody thing wouldn't start! Eventually we got it going though and it was ok at the fuel stop, where I put some air in the tyres. It's extremely hard to get the pressures right when you have been riding for a couple of hours and with a stab in the dark guess, I'm only 1.5 lbs down across the pair. Be easy if I carried a pump of some description.

Our last stint would take us to Villa San Giovani. I'd like to say it was without incident, it wasn't. I can think myself fortunate I'm able to write this, this evening. We had just passed through Scilla on the twisty coast road. As I started to take a left hand bend, around the corner towards me, over the white line and heading straight for me at speed, was some lad on a scooter. I really thought he was going to hit me head on. A real shout out loud prepare for impact moment. Somehow though, we both managed to swerve right and the collision that looked so likely moments earlier,  never happened. These people are all bloody nutcases!

On arrival at the B&B, the Shadslow was still playing up, so Grizzly contacted his motorcycle guru mate, Pat Fox. The advice apparently, to get some WD40 and spray the f*** out of the switch!

So off these two intrepid knights went in search of the holy grail, the yellow and blue can of WD. And they found some. Advice heeded, I guess time will tell whether it has worked.

To end the evening, we went in search of dinner. There's very little in the neighbourhood, so we ended up with 2 takeaway pizzas and 2 cans of coke (first night without beer), sitting on a bench, watching the people go by.

Tomorrow we are taking the ferry over to Sicily, if I can work out what we need to do to get our boarding passes. Every day is an adventure, eh?

Ciao

  1. Had scooters head on to us on the Amalfi Coast Drive, the split like the Red Arrows each side of us ...
