We decided to go with an audio guide each at €6 a pop. We walk at our own pace, so it made sense to have one each, rather than trying to put an ear each to one device. 10 minutes in, mine packed up.
The villa is fantastic, and clearly belonged to someone very rich, when you see all the fantastic mosaics. I have been before with Catherine. The one that thing I was really hoping to see this time was the ladies in their bikinis doing their gymnastics. When I went with Catherine there was some work going on and we couldn't get to see that particular mosaic.
I doubt you would find a finer set of mosaics anywhere else in the world, so if you are ever in Sicily a visit here is a must do.
I am not really sure what time we left but you can be sure I got my money back for the dead audio guide. Mind you, I had to ask for it, she wasn't just going to give it to me.
Our next stop was our fuel stop some 148 km away, however, when the route came up on TomTom it was nothing like the one I had planned in my route planning app. A quick change of settings in TomTom and it looked more like the one I had seen before, using motorways, which we don't normally do. The route wasn't straightforward though, as there were lots of road closures and roadworks on the motorways themselves. Even though we made good time, the motorway was quite boring.
We had to make a slight detour to hit our fuel stop, as as we weren't coming in from the same direction as originally planned. No big deal though.
It was only a 10km ride from there to our hotel, which has a free underground car park so nice and secure. We wouldn't want to leave them in the street and find them like this one!
We were checked in and in the room by 3pm. I say room, there are actually 2 rooms. One with a king sized bed, the other with 2 singles and a table and chairs. Both have their own tv and access to a sun terrace. It just needs a couple of loungers and a drying rack. I expect we are both looking forward to a night of solitude.
We're here for 2 nights. Hopefully, we shall get some sightseeing done tomorrow, though Grizzly has plans to buy bulbs and maybe even try removing his sidestand switch!!!
I'm not too sure about the area the hotel is located in, it's all a bit dirty and run down looking but the views from the terrace aren't too bad.
After last night's mammoth meal Grizzly wanted fast food, so we walked down to the train station where there is a McDonald's. You can buy beer in McDs over here, so Grizzly had one, obviously. Lemon tea for me.
Outside McDs, on the station concourse, we came across a dinky looking police car. Not exactly the Sweeney, eh?
On the walk back up, we found a motorcycle cycle shop/workshop, so hopefully they will be able to sell Grizzly his bulbs.
Palermo is as far as we go and I have covered over 1900 miles to get here. On Tuesday we start the return part of the tour.
Ciao
