Day 14 - Palermo to Scilla

We reckon there must be some dispute going on with refuse collectors, as there was just as much shit and rubbish piled high at the sides of the road as when we rode in to Sicily, on the way out, and not just Palermo. The place is one massive landfill site. Such a shame.

Grizzly's starting gremlins, still exist. Thoughts have moved on from side stand to starter switch, though whacking the stand up and down seems to help, so anybodies guess. It seems to be getting worse though. There are nightly calls to Grizzly's buddy to report the state of play and get further advice,  all to no avail. We will try and find a dealer tomorrow to help check the starter button.

We could have used the motorway to get back to Messina but there wasn't a massive saving in time, so we took the coast road. Through towns it could be dlow going but in general we were able to keep up quite a decent speed. The view, when we got a chance to look, was really breathtaking in places.

We stopped along the way for some water and a snack, sitting outside the supermarket in the shade, to do so. Sharing the shade was a large black dog. Nice as pie, till I, then Grizzly talked to it, when the grumpy fecker growled at us!

Our first scheduled stop was our fuel stop. Another one that wasn't, as when we arrived , a tanker was offloading and the pumps were coned off. There was another a few kilometres up the road, which besides being the cheapest we've seen in Sicily also gave Grizzly a chance for a coffee. Next stop Messina and the ferry.

We took the scenic route  SS113, very twisty. Now twisty is ok, though Grizzly's not keen but for some bizarre reason, they had decided to cobble the hairpins. Smooth tarmac to red cobblestones. WTF! I hate to imagine what they are like when wet.

We were soon in Messina and at the ferry port.  I had it sussed now. Join the queue,  open app for tickets, click check in, show geezer QR code, ride on.

Bye bye Sicily.  On board the ferry with Grizzly and Dudley.

We are staying in Scilla tonight, the Scilla Hotel, a small place 5 minutes walk from the main square. We have garage parking too, I suspect another private space let out just for us. We are back in one room again, but I still get the king sized bed 😁. The room is ok, not much of a view though. You can just see the sea through the trees.

We walked into town and took the lift to the beach level. We went into a beach bar, musically themed. On the walls were singles from famous artists, 60s onwards to the 80s maybe, Beatles,  Stones, Dire Straits, etc.

We ordered a beer, just, over the modern racket thumping out. When the beer eventually came, we had to send it back as it either had a massive head or was two different colours,  like it was a new keg or something. The bar maid clearly had no fecking clue. We  decided to leave and head back up to town, where we found a pizza/snack bar that sold beer. Cushty.

Grizzly had an assortment of breaded things,  I ordered a large pizza. By god was it large! Note to self,  never order large, except for beer.

That pretty much wraps up Day 14. Tomorrow we are heading north east to a place called Schiavonea, where it is likely to be 34 degrees!  🌞🌞🌞

I'll leave you with a couple of photos of Scilla.

Ciao
